The field

Tropical infection, read in the setting it occurs in

Tropical medicine is defined less by latitude than by the conditions under which disease is transmitted, diagnosed and treated: vectors that persist for most of the year, parasites that move between several hosts, diagnostic work carried out without a reference laboratory nearby, and control programs that have to hold their gains across whole districts. Research written for those conditions is assessed here by people who work in them.

Ring form

Early trophozoite; thin cytoplasm with a single chromatin dot.

Trophozoite

Growing parasite; pigment becomes visible in the cytoplasm.

Schizont

Segmented parasite with merozoites ready for release.

Gametocyte

Sexual stage; the form taken up by the vector in a blood meal.

Parasite stages as they are reported from a Giemsa-stained film. Light microscopy of this kind remains the confirmatory step behind a large share of the clinical and epidemiological work this journal considers.

Adjacent work in infectious disease, microbiology, global health and environmental health is considered where its relevance to tropical disease or tropical practice is substantive and stated.

Vector-borne disease and vector biology

Malaria, arboviruses, trypanosomiasis and filarial disease; vector ecology, behavior, insecticide resistance and control.

Neglected tropical diseases

Parasitic, bacterial, viral and fungal conditions and snakebite envenoming; diagnosis, care, prevention, disability, stigma and control programs.

Tropical parasitology

Basic and mechanistic parasite and host research, life-cycle biology, pharmacology, resistance and research methods; immediate clinical application is not required.

Tropical infection

Tropical bacterial, viral, fungal and mycobacterial disease; host responses, diagnostics, therapeutics, resistance and emerging transmission.

Clinical tropical medicine

Clinical care in endemic and non-endemic settings, imported and travel-associated disease, envenoming, podoconiosis and other substantive tropical clinical or exposure questions.

Tropical epidemiology, prevention and control

Population research, surveillance, implementation, qualitative methods, health systems and models addressing tropical disease or medical practice.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Decisions

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Editorial independence

Editorial decisions are taken by the handling editor on the reviewers' assessments. Payment of the article processing charge follows acceptance and has no bearing on it, and no editorial or reviewing role carries any expectation of a favorable decision.

Research integrity

What a manuscript has to document

Tropical-disease research is carried out in clinics, in laboratories and in the field, often with the participation of whole communities. These requirements apply to every submission that involves them.

Human participants: Studies involving people require approval from a named research-ethics committee and documented informed consent, reported with the approval reference. Work with school-age children or whole communities requires the community and administrative permissions obtained in the study setting to be stated.
Trial registration: Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Reporting guidelines: Randomized trials follow CONSORT, observational studies STROBE, systematic reviews PRISMA, diagnostic-accuracy studies STARD, and animal studies ARRIVE. Prevalence and surveillance work states the sampling frame, the case definition and the diagnostic method used to confirm it.
Specimens, pathogens and vectors: Manuscripts reporting clinical specimens, isolates or field-collected vectors state their provenance, the collection permissions under which they were obtained, and the containment conditions under which they were handled.
Data availability: Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
Interests and funding: All authors declare competing interests and the role of every funder in study design, analysis and the decision to publish.
