Information Theory in Biology

Information theory is a mathematical discipline that studies the representation, storage, and communication of information. In biology, information theory has been used to study the genetic code, to distinguish true communication signals from noise in biological communication systems, and to analyze the contributions of sequence and structure to the functioning of biological molecules. Information theory provides researchers with a formal language to describe biological information and better understand the rules governing its storage, transmission, and processing. Information theory can also be used to study how cells encode information, or how variations in genetic instructions produce an organism's observable traits. As a result, information theory is of great importance to biologists, providing them with a powerful tool for understanding the complexities of living systems.
