Article Processing Charges
What publication costs, when it is charged, what it pays for, and the terms that apply if a manuscript is withdrawn.
Article processing charge

One charge per accepted article. There is no submission charge and no charge for reading.
- When it is charged
- After acceptance. A manuscript is assessed, reviewed and decided before any charge arises, and a manuscript that is not accepted is not charged.
- Peer review
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- Editorial independence
- The decision belongs to the handling editor and the reviewers. Payment, membership, an editorial role and the use of any optional service confer no advantage in the review or acceptance of a manuscript.
What the charge pays for
So an author can see where the money goes.
The journal charges no subscription and sells no access, so the work of publishing an accepted article is funded once, by the article processing charge. It covers:
- editorial handling of the manuscript, and the administration of independent peer review
- copyediting, typesetting and the production of the published article
- registration of a Crossref DOI and deposit of the article metadata
- permanent open-access hosting of the article, with no charge to any reader
The charge is per accepted article and does not vary with the length of the manuscript or the number of figures, tables or supplementary files.
Paying the charge
So the practical steps are clear before acceptance.
The corresponding author is invoiced after the decision to accept. The invoice states the amount, the payment methods available and the details the billing office needs, and it can be addressed to an institution, a funder or a grant where the author asks for that.
Any tax that applies is determined by the payer’s jurisdiction and status and is confirmed on the invoice. Questions about invoicing, payment methods, currency or institutional billing go to the editorial office at [email protected].
Fee-relief inquiries
So an author who needs to ask knows where to ask.
Authors for whom the charge is an obstacle are invited to write to the editorial office before submitting, describing the position. Each inquiry is considered individually by the billing office.
A fee-relief inquiry is handled separately from the editorial process and is not visible to the handling editor or to the reviewers, so it can have no bearing on the assessment of the manuscript. Write to [email protected] with “Fee-relief inquiry” and the manuscript title in the subject line.
Withdrawing a manuscript
So an author knows the terms before, rather than after.
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal’s APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
What the author keeps
So the value of the charge is visible on the other side of it.
Authors retain copyright in their articles. Every article is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, so the author may deposit the published version in a repository, share it, translate it and reuse it without seeking further permission, and any reader may do the same with attribution.
