Copyright License
JBSR publishes open access articles that are free to read, share, and reuse with proper attribution.
Our licensing policy protects author rights while supporting broad dissemination.
Author Rights And Journal License
Authors retain copyright in their work. By publishing with JBSR, authors grant the journal a non exclusive license to publish, distribute, and archive the article in all formats. This allows JBSR to disseminate the work globally while preserving the author's ownership.
Authors may share the published version on personal websites, institutional repositories, and scholarly networks, provided that the official citation and DOI are included. This supports visibility while ensuring citation integrity.
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0
JBSR articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. This license allows others to copy, distribute, display, perform, and adapt the work, including for commercial purposes, as long as proper credit is given to the original authors and source.
Share
Readers may redistribute the article in any medium or format with proper attribution.
Adapt
Content may be remixed or transformed for new research or educational purposes.
Use Commercially
Commercial reuse is permitted when attribution is clear and the license terms are followed.
Attribution Requirements
All reuse must acknowledge the original authors, article title, journal name, and DOI. If changes are made, the user must indicate that modifications were made and should not imply endorsement by the authors. This protects the integrity of the scholarly record and ensures accurate credit.
Funder And Institutional Compliance
Many funders require immediate open access and clear reuse rights. The CC BY license meets most mandates and allows deposition in institutional repositories without embargo. If your grant has specific requirements for data sharing or license language, note them at submission so production can ensure compliance.
Self Archiving And Scholarly Sharing
Authors are encouraged to share the final published PDF and accepted manuscript widely. When posting, include the formal citation and DOI. This practice improves discovery in Google Scholar and repository systems while keeping the authoritative version easy to verify.
Translations And Derivative Works
Translations, teaching resources, and derivative summaries are permitted under CC BY when attribution is maintained and changes are identified. We ask that derivative works link back to the original article to avoid version confusion and to support accurate citation metrics.
Third Party Material
Authors are responsible for securing permissions for any third party content included in their manuscript, such as figures, images, or extensive quotations. If third party material is not covered by the CC BY license, authors must clearly label it and provide the applicable permissions and restrictions.
When permissions are required, submit documentation at the time of submission or during revision. Articles cannot proceed to publication if rights are unclear or if reuse would violate existing licenses.
Moral Rights And Integrity
The CC BY license does not waive moral rights. Authors retain the right to be identified as the creators and to object to derogatory treatment of their work. Users must not imply endorsement by authors or the journal when reusing content.
Author Responsibilities
Authors must confirm that the manuscript is original, that all coauthors approve the submission, and that any overlapping material is disclosed. If the work is derived from prior publications, explain the relationship and cite the original sources. Transparency protects authors and strengthens editorial review.
Permissions Requests
If a third party requests permission to reuse material beyond the CC BY terms or seeks confirmation of rights, direct them to the published license statement on the article page. For complex cases, the editorial office can confirm the license status and point to the official version of record.
Sharing And Preservation
JBSR supports broad sharing of published articles. Authors may deposit the final version in institutional repositories, research sharing platforms, and personal websites. Use the DOI link to ensure that readers reach the official version of record. Please avoid uploading altered PDFs that omit citation details or DOI links. This preserves citation accuracy.
Long term preservation is supported through archiving workflows and reliable hosting. These measures protect access to biosemiotic research for the long term.
