OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING

Article Processing Charges

The Journal of Biosemiotic Research (JBSR) operates a transparent open access model to make scholarship on biological meaning accessible to the global community.

APCs support expert peer review, professional production, and long term discovery of research on sign processes, communication, and interpretation in living systems.

They also sustain editorial oversight and publishing infrastructure.

APC At A Glance

JBSR does not charge a submission fee. The Article Processing Charge is assessed only after a manuscript is accepted through independent peer review. The APC applies to research articles, reviews, theoretical analyses, short communications, and editorials accepted for publication.

Pricing is uniform to keep budgeting simple for individuals, departments, and research centers. If your study is supported by a grant, the APC can be covered as a publication cost. The editorial office can provide invoices or documentation for approvals. All charges are billed in USD and payable only after acceptance.

If your institution requires a purchase order, pre approval documentation, or third party billing, email [email protected] and we will assist with the required paperwork.

Standard APC Rate

Our pricing supports the full open access publishing workflow while ensuring predictable costs for authors and institutions.

Article Type APC (USD) When Charged Included Services
All Standard Article Types $1,200 After Acceptance Peer review, production, DOI registration, and online publication

Editorial Independence

APC payment has no influence on editorial decisions. Every manuscript undergoes peer review based solely on scholarly merit, methodological rigor, and relevance to biosemiotic research.

What The APC Supports

Open access publishing requires sustained investment in editorial oversight, production quality, and research visibility. Your APC funds the services below, ensuring that biosemiotic scholarship is discoverable and trusted worldwide.

01

Rigorous Peer Review

Expert reviewer selection and quality control for theoretical depth, methodological rigor, and interpretive clarity.

02

Production And Formatting

Professional copyediting and formatting to ensure readability across philosophy, biology, and cognitive science audiences.

03

DOI And Metadata

Permanent DOI assignment and structured metadata to support discovery and citation integrity.

04

Open Access Hosting

Secure hosting, long term preservation, and global access to published articles.

05

Ethics And Integrity

Plagiarism screening, conflict of interest checks, and adherence to editorial policies.

06

Visibility And Reach

Indexing support, metadata dissemination, and promotion across open access discovery systems.

Open Access Compliance And Reuse

Many funders and institutions require immediate open access with a Creative Commons license. JBSR publishes under CC BY 4.0 by default, enabling broad reuse with proper attribution and preserving author credit.

We prepare structured metadata and XML outputs to support discovery by search engines, library systems, and scholarly databases. Authors may also archive accepted or published versions in repositories with DOI links to the journal record.

For data intensive or interdisciplinary studies, we encourage repository deposits for datasets, code, and supplementary materials. This strengthens transparency and supports reuse across biosemiotics, philosophy of biology, and cognitive science.

Waivers And Discounts

JBSR is committed to equitable publishing. Waiver requests are reviewed case by case to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent publication of high quality biosemiotic research.

Submit waiver requests at the time of submission so the editorial office can review eligibility before a final acceptance decision is issued.

Requests are handled confidentially.

Editors And Reviewers

Active editors and reviewers may qualify for APC discounts of up to 30 percent based on service history and current journal needs.

Authors From LMICs

Partial waivers are available for authors from low and lower middle income countries. Contact the editorial office for guidance.

Students And Early Career Authors

Student authors with valid institutional identification may be eligible for a reduced APC of $540 USD for any accepted article type.

Membership Options

JBSR membership can reduce APC exposure for frequent contributors and partner institutions. Explore membership benefits to align costs with publication volume.

Important Notes On Waivers

Waivers and discounts are not cumulative. Approval is based on eligibility and availability at the time of acceptance. Please request a waiver at submission or contact [email protected] before final acceptance to confirm options.

Payment And Withdrawal Policy

APC invoices are issued after acceptance. If you need documentation for institutional or grant processing, the editorial office can provide a detailed invoice and supporting materials.

Payment Process

Once your article is accepted, you will receive an invoice with a secure payment link and instructions. Payment can be completed by authors, institutions, or funding agencies. For questions about invoicing or payment timelines, email [email protected].

All published articles appear under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Review the copyright and licensing terms before submission.

Withdrawal Policy

Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a 30 percent APC withdrawal charge to cover administrative and reviewer coordination costs. Authors must request a formal withdrawal and receive confirmation before submitting the same work elsewhere.

For formatting and reporting requirements, consult the Instructions for Authors and editorial policies.
