Release profile

JAPST · Pharmaceutical science, technology and practice
01

Research areas

A submission should make a clear contribution to pharmaceutical knowledge, technology, medicine safety or pharmacy practice. A new formulation or manufacturing process is not required for every study.

Drug discovery and pharmaceutical chemistry

Medicinal chemistry, drug and prodrug design, lead identification and optimization, structure–activity relationships, target validation and computational drug discovery. Chemical and molecular studies should establish their relevance to a drug, therapeutic target or pharmaceutical problem.

Pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology

Drug mechanisms, pharmacodynamics, dose–response relationships, pharmacokinetics, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, drug interactions, safety pharmacology and toxicology. Studies may address experimental systems or clinical drug response without requiring formulation innovation.

Pharmacognosy and natural products

Phytochemistry, medicinal natural products, bioactive constituents, herbal medicines and ethnopharmacology with a defined pharmaceutical question. Work may examine identity, composition, biological activity, safety, standardization or quality, using authenticated materials and methods appropriate to the claims.

Pharmaceutics, drug delivery and biopharmaceutics

Preformulation, physical pharmacy, excipients, dosage forms, controlled and targeted delivery, nanomedicines and pharmaceutical biomaterials. Biopharmaceutics includes dissolution, permeability, bioavailability, bioequivalence and relationships between drug properties, dosage forms and biological performance.

Pharmaceutical analysis and bioanalysis

Analytical method development and validation, drug and metabolite measurement, impurity and adulterant detection, stability-indicating assays, spectroscopy, chromatography, dissolution testing and process analytical technology. Methods should be evaluated for their intended pharmaceutical or bioanalytical use.

Pharmaceutical technology, manufacturing and quality

Process development, pharmaceutical engineering, scale-up, continuous manufacturing, stability, packaging, quality control and assurance, quality by design, validation and technology transfer. Regulatory science includes evidence and methods supporting pharmaceutical quality, safety, efficacy and regulatory evaluation.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology

Therapeutic proteins, peptides, antibodies, vaccines and nucleic-acid therapeutics; their discovery, biological evaluation, characterization, formulation, delivery or production. Biotechnology and bioinformatics fit when the pharmaceutical application is part of the research question.

Clinical, translational and pharmacy-practice research

JAPST also welcomes clinical pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, pharmacovigilance, pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics. Clinical, hospital, community, social and public-health pharmacy studies may address prescribing, drug utilization, adherence, interactions, access to medicines, medication safety or pharmaceutical-care services. Their contribution can concern the use and effects of existing medicines; a new product or formulation is not a condition of scope.

02

Article types

Choose the format that matches the contribution. Clinical and observational study designs are included within original research.

Original research articles

Experimental, analytical, computational, clinical, observational and pharmacy-practice studies addressing a defined pharmaceutical question.

Review articles

Critical narrative reviews, focused reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses with a clear question, transparent methods and balanced interpretation.

Case reports

Well-documented cases concerning adverse drug reactions, interactions, medication errors, pharmacotherapy or pharmaceutical care, with appropriate consent and cautious interpretation.

Short communications and technical notes

Concise reports of a focused finding or method, with enough evidence to support the stated contribution.

Methods and protocols

Pharmaceutical methods or study protocols with a clear rationale, sufficient methodological detail and evaluation appropriate to their purpose.

Perspectives, commentaries and policy analyses

Evidence-based scholarly discussion of pharmaceutical science, technology, regulation, medicine use or pharmacy practice.

03

What a submission should establish

The journal evaluates scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality and relevance.

Scientific evidence

  • Clear pharmaceutical question and contribution
  • Reproducible methods, controls and statistics
  • Analytical validation where relevant
  • Pharmacological, clinical, analytical, process or practice evidence appropriate to the claim
  • Supplier, manufacturer, lot, catalog or biological-material provenance where relevant
  • Limitations and uncertainty stated directly

Declarations and review

  • Authorship and contributions
  • Funding, sponsor role and commercial interests
  • Ethics, consent and trial registration where applicable
  • Data-availability statement for empirical research
  • Material AI-assisted use

Peer review: Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
