Biography
Education. He has graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Hellas-Greece, with a degree in Plant Sciences in 1987. He received his PhD in Plant Biochemistry from the School of Plant Sciences at the University of Reading (UK) in 1991, where he discovered the ACC oxidase, the enzyme responsible for ethylene biosynthesis in plant tissues. He managed to express in vitro activity of this enzyme for the first time in 1990. After continuing his work in the area of ethylene biosynthesis with Prof. Philip John (U. of Reading, UK), he moved as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Horticulture at Michigan State University (USA), working on the molecular biology of ethylene biosynthesis with Prof. David R. Dilley for more than 2 years. In 1996, he returned to Greece as a Postdoctoral Scholar joining the team of Prof. Nickolas J. Panopoulos at the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology in Heraklion, Crete, where he worked (1996-1998) in the area of molecular biotechnology identifying yeast genes involved in the detoxification of cercosporin, a toxin produced by plant pathogenic Cercospora species, with potential applications to plants.
Research experience and scientific leadership profile. Since 1998 he holds a Faculty position in the Department of Plant Sciences at the Technological Educational Institute of Crete in Heraklion. He is a tenured Professor since 2004. He has served as Head of School /Faculty pf Agriculture, Food & Nutrition (currently since Sept 2014) and Head of the Department of Agriculture for nearly four years until the summer of 2006. Also from September 2008 till today he serves as the Director (Government Statement (FEK) 299/July 2009) and Member of Scientific Board of Centre for Technological Research of Crete (CTR-Crete) a research Institution affiliated with TEI-Crete.
To date, he has been the author of 32 papers in referred journals and has been presented in 16 reviewed papers in proceedings of international conferences
