Overview
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual oilseed and ornamental species in the family Asteraceae, cultivated worldwide for edible oil, confectionery and birdseed kernels, and as a flowering crop. Its large capitulum bears seeds rich in lipids, with an oil profile dominated by unsaturated fatty acids and accompanied by tocopherols, phenolic compounds, and other antioxidants. Agronomic performance depends on cultivar, sowing date, soil and irrigation conditions, fertilization, and pest pressure, while oil quality is further shaped by extraction and refining processes. Research grouped under this topic addresses both sunflower agronomy and oil chemistry. Cultivation studies evaluate hybrid cultivar responses to nitrogen, organic amendments such as bat guano, allelopathic plant interactions, and sowing date under irrigated, semi-arid, and saline conditions, alongside pest-host preference work relevant to crop protection. Oil-focused studies examine the influence of chemical refining on total phenolics and antioxidant activity, molecular composition and potential health benefits of virgin sunflower oil characterized by NMR analysis, comparative fatty-acid and physicochemical properties of seed oils, and solvent-residue assessment in edible vegetable oils. This peer-reviewed literature supports researchers in crop production, oilseed quality, and food science concerned with improving sunflower yield and the nutritional value of its oil.
