Overview

Animal conservation is the protection and management of animal species and the habitats they depend on, with the aim of preventing extinctions and preserving biodiversity. It draws on ecology, population biology, and geography to monitor populations, assess threats such as habitat loss, hunting, and human encroachment, and design measures that allow species and ecosystems to persist. Approaches range from protecting and restoring habitats and establishing reserves to mapping suitable habitat, managing human–Wildlife conflict, and integrating conservation with sustainable livelihoods. The Journal of Wildlife publishes peer-reviewed research on wild animal populations, their habitats, and the strategies used to conserve them. Reported studies examine the migration status, anthropogenic threats, and conservation directions for the White Eared Kob in Ethiopia from an ecotourism perspective, and apply a geographic information system approach to analyse habitat suitability and conservation for African buffaloes at a national park. This work illustrates how field surveys, spatial analysis, and threat assessment inform the conservation of species in their natural ranges. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to animal conservation and the broader study of Wildlife protection and habitat management.
