Overview
Sustainable agriculture is an approach to food and fibre production that aims to meet present needs while preserving the ecological, economic, and social capacity of future generations to do the same. It integrates practices that maintain soil health and fertility, conserve water, protect biodiversity, and reduce dependence on synthetic inputs, including crop rotation and diversification, residue retention, integrated nutrient and pest management, conservation tillage, and the use of biofertilizers and beneficial microbial symbioses. The aim is to sustain or improve yields and livelihoods while limiting environmental externalities such as soil degradation, nutrient loss, and greenhouse-gas emissions, and while building resilience to climate variability. Research in this area examines permaculture practices for sustainable production, the prospects for sustainable agriculture and the role of agricultural graduates, strategic shifts to improve fertilizer response and foodgrain output, the use of biofertilizers and cyanobacteria to enhance soil and crop performance, mycorrhizal modifiers of crop growth, and the climate-land degradation-food security nexus. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning agronomy, soil science, and agricultural biotechnology relevant to sustainable production, linking field practice to resource conservation, food security, and adaptation under changing environmental conditions.
