Overview

Endothelial cells form the single-cell-thick endothelium lining the lumen of blood and lymphatic vessels, serving as a dynamic interface between circulating blood and underlying tissue. They regulate vascular tone, permeability, and barrier function, control the trafficking of fluid, solutes, and leukocytes, and orchestrate hemostasis, angiogenesis, and inflammatory responses through secreted mediators and surface adhesion molecules. Endothelial dysfunction, marked by impaired vasodilation, a pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory phenotype, and increased expression of adhesion molecules such as VCAM-1, is a central mechanism in atherosclerosis, stroke, heart failure, and tumor vascularization. The endothelium also participates in wound healing and tissue repair through angiogenic sprouting and interaction with the extracellular matrix. Research connected to this area examines endothelial function in stroke subtypes assessed by peripheral arterial tonometry, cardiorenal signaling in heart failure, VCAM-1 gene expression in normal and tumoral colorectal tissue, neuropilin-1 expression in leukemogenesis, the influence of acute and chronic wound fluid on healing in three-dimensional wound models, and papillary endothelial hyperplasia. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work relevant to vascular biology and the endothelium within the field of Tissue Repair and Regeneration, connecting endothelial signaling, angiogenesis, and barrier function to wound healing, vascular pathology, and regenerative processes.
