Overview
Colorectal cancer is a cancer that develops in the colon or rectum, the lower part of the large intestine, and ranks among the most common malignancies and causes of cancer death worldwide. The disease usually arises from precancerous polyps in the bowel lining that, over years, may acquire successive genetic and epigenetic changes leading to invasive cancer. Its risk is influenced by age, hereditary predisposition, chronic inflammation, and dietary and lifestyle factors, and it can spread beyond the bowel, with the liver being a frequent site of metastasis through portal venous drainage. Because precursor lesions are detectable, screening with colonoscopy and stool-based tests such as fecal immunochemical testing enables prevention and early diagnosis, while treatment of established disease combines surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immune-based or targeted approaches according to stage. Research themes pertinent to gastrointestinal and hepatic medicine include the molecular biology of tumor progression and metastasis, screening and early detection, perioperative risk, and dietary and survivorship considerations. Studies published in this area cover colorectal cancer gene regulation, mechanisms of resistance to apoptosis, adhesion-molecule and gene-expression analyses in tumor tissue, suppression of metastasis through E-cadherin, anatomical contributors to interval cancers, screening programs, dietary intervention, perioperative cardiac risk, and the psychological dimensions of survivorship.
