Overview

Back pain is discomfort felt anywhere along the spine, from the neck to the lower back, ranging from a dull ache to sharp or stabbing sensations. It is one of the most common health complaints and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Back pain can stem from muscles, ligaments, joints, intervertebral discs, or nerves, and may be acute or chronic; the lower back is most frequently affected. Management spans physical therapy, exercise, medication, injections, and, in selected cases, interventional or surgical treatment, with chronic cases often requiring a combination of approaches. Spine and Neuroscience publishes peer-reviewed research on disorders of the spine and nervous system, including the causes and treatment of pain. Reported work examines sacral injection techniques, the treatment of chronic mixed low back pain with a high-dose capsaicin patch, the prevalence of neck, shoulder, and low back musculoskeletal pain, and approaches to chronic pain including music-induced analgesia through endogenous opioid production. Related studies address chronic pain in other clinical contexts and its physical and psychological dimensions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to back pain and the broader study of spinal disorders and pain management.
