Overview

Sleep therapy refers to the range of behavioral, psychological, physiological, and device-based interventions used to improve sleep quality and treat sleep disorders, with cognitive and behavioral methods central to the non-pharmacological management of insomnia and related conditions. Because sleep disturbance both contributes to and results from stress, anxiety, depression, and medical illness, sleep therapy targets the maladaptive behaviors, arousal, and circadian misalignment that perpetuate poor sleep. Research in this area examines stimulation-based and physiological interventions, including peripheral somatosensory stimulation and pulsed magnetic therapy, as well as comprehensive music therapy and intravascular laser irradiation of blood as adjuncts to improving sleep quality. Mechanistic context is provided by work on the endocannabinoid system in circadian rhythm and sleep regulation, and clinical applications by studies of obstructive sleep apnea management with nasal expiratory positive airway pressure devices and of non-pharmacological strategies for disrupted sleep in dementia. Objective measurement of sleep quality, the behavioral effects of clock changes and weekends, and physical activity as a modifiable factor further inform therapeutic approaches. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical trials, interventional studies, and reviews addressing behavioral, physiological, and device-based therapies aimed at improving sleep quality and managing sleep disorders.
