Overview

Case-control studies are a type of observational research design widely used in epidemiology and public health to investigate the relationship between an exposure and an outcome. In this design, individuals who have a particular outcome, such as a disease (the cases), are compared with individuals who do not have it (the controls), and the two groups are examined to see how their past exposures differ. This approach is efficient for studying conditions and for identifying factors associated with disease, and it is a key tool for generating evidence about risk factors and associations. Case-control studies fall within the scope of Public Health International, which addresses the methods and findings of population health research. Research relevant to this area applies case-control and comparative designs to examine associations between exposures and health outcomes, including studies that compare affected and unaffected groups to assess factors linked to disease. Such work illustrates how comparing cases with controls helps reveal associations that inform prevention and clinical understanding. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to case-control studies and epidemiological research methods.
