Overview

Genomics is the study of the complete genetic complement of an organism, encompassing the structure, function, evolution, mapping and editing of genomes. It extends beyond single genes to the whole-genome scale, integrating DNA sequencing, variant analysis, transcriptomics and computational interpretation to understand how genetic information is organised, regulated and translated into phenotype. Its applications include identifying disease-associated variants, informing personalised medicine and nutrition, characterising evolution and biodiversity, and supporting biotechnology. Genomics is tightly coupled with proteomics and bioinformatics, since the functional meaning of genomic data emerges through analysis of gene products and biological networks. Research relevant to this area includes integrated proteomic and genomic techniques applied to cancer diagnostics and personalised medicine; the proteomics and bioinformatics status of the Human Proteome Project; label-free proteomic and molecular analysis of a parasitic organism; analysis of plasma TREM2 and a genetic polymorphism in relation to liver enzymes; the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology; the trajectory from personalised medication toward customised nutrition; reviews of molecular biomarkers; and fractal and chromosome-signature analyses of genomic organisation. Foundational editorial and methodological contributions on Proteomics and Genomics Research support the field. Together this work links genome-scale information to biological mechanism, diagnostics, evolution and the translation of genetic knowledge into clinical and nutritional application.
