Overview
Natriuretic Peptides are a family of hormones that help regulate the body's fluid volume, sodium balance, and blood pressure. The main forms, including atrial and B-type natriuretic Peptides, are released largely by the heart in response to stretching of the heart chambers when blood volume or pressure rises. They promote the excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys, relax blood vessels, and counterbalance systems that retain fluid and raise blood pressure, such as the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system. Because their levels rise when the heart is under strain, natriuretic Peptides and their precursor fragments are also widely used as biomarkers to help detect and assess heart failure and to gauge cardiac risk. Within peptide science and clinical medicine, natriuretic Peptides bridge endocrinology, cardiology, and laboratory diagnostics. The journal Peptides publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to this topic, including a study showing that preoperative and postoperative N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide levels predict cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection, work that illustrates the use of these Peptides as markers of cardiac risk. This page gathers open-access research relevant to natriuretic Peptides for readers seeking primary scientific and clinical evidence.
