Overview
Bacillus is a genus of rod-shaped, spore-forming bacteria found widely in soil, water, and other environments. Members of the genus are notable for their ability to form resilient endospores that survive harsh conditions, and for producing a broad array of enzymes and bioactive compounds. Different Bacillus species have important roles in agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental management, including promoting plant growth, suppressing plant pathogens, producing industrial enzymes, controlling insect pests, and remediating pollutants. Within Parasite Research and the journal's broader coverage of microbial and biological agents, Bacillus is relevant to the study of organisms used in biological control and bioremediation. Reported research relevant to this topic includes the biosorption of lead using a strain of Bacillus subtilis, the use of Bacillus thuringiensis against an agricultural insect pest, the production of cellulase from Bacillus subtilis using lignocellulosic waste, and the optimization and purification of laccase enzyme from a Bacillus species. Together these illustrate the genus's value in pollution control, pest management, and enzyme production. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to Bacillus and its biological and biotechnological applications.
