Overview
The nose is the organ of the face that forms the entrance to the respiratory tract and houses the sense of smell. It warms, humidifies, and filters inhaled air, contributes to voice resonance, and contains the olfactory epithelium responsible for detecting odours. Its internal anatomy includes the nasal septum, the turbinates that regulate airflow and conditioning, and the paranasal sinuses; disorders of these structures, ranging from obstruction and allergic or non-allergic rhinitis to tumours, trauma, and infection, fall within the specialty of otolaryngology. The journal Otolaryngology Advances publishes peer-reviewed research on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the nose and related head and neck structures. Relevant work in this collection includes studies on inferior turbinate surgery and the decision-making behind technique selection, anthropometric analysis of the nasal index, nasal cytology in the multidisciplinary diagnosis of allergic and non-allergic respiratory disease, reconstruction of nasal defects using bilobed flaps, validation of the sino-nasal outcome test for patient-reported symptoms, and pleomorphic adenoma of the nasal septum. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to the anatomy, physiology, and clinical management of the nose and nasal disorders.
