Overview

Phosphorus is a chemical element (symbol P, atomic number 15), a reactive non-metal that occurs in several allotropes, including white, red, and black phosphorus, and almost never in its free form in nature because of that reactivity. It is a macronutrient essential to all living systems, forming the backbone of nucleic acids, the phosphate groups of ATP and phospholipids, and the mineral phase of bone, while inorganic phosphate ions participate in buffering and intracellular signalling. In agriculture, phosphorus is a primary fertiliser nutrient whose availability frequently limits crop growth and yield, and research examines soil and foliar phosphorus application, phosphate solubilisation, and the use of enzymes such as phytase to improve phosphorus utilisation in plant and animal systems. Phosphorus chemistry and metabolism are also central to nutrition and physiology, including dietary phosphate intake, mineral composition of foods, and the regulation of phosphate balance, where dietary cation-anion relationships modulate phosphate handling. Analyses of mineral content in foods and tissues quantify phosphorus alongside other essential elements. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on phosphorus chemistry, plant nutrition, and the role of phosphate in biological and agricultural systems.
