Overview

A mathematical model is a representation of a real-world system or process using mathematical concepts, equations, and relationships. By translating a phenomenon into a formal structure, a model allows researchers to analyse how its components interact, to test hypotheses, and to predict future behaviour under different conditions. Mathematical models are used throughout science, engineering, medicine, and economics, and are especially valuable where direct experimentation is impractical, such as in forecasting the spread of disease or the dynamics of populations. Within the journal's model-based-research scope, studies have applied mathematical modelling to a range of problems, including the transmission dynamics of typhoid fever in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the impact of intervention; a general approach to modelling COVID-19; a modified SEIR model interpreting case data from Singapore, Spain, and Venezuela; an analytical solution describing the intracellular life cycle of SARS-CoV-2; and genetic-mathematical modelling of interacting populations. Such work demonstrates how equations and simulation can capture epidemic spread, biological interaction, and other complex dynamics. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to mathematical modelling, supporting mathematicians, epidemiologists, and students interested in the formulation, solution, and application of quantitative models.
