Data Archiving & Permissions

Ensuring transparency and reproducibility in medical informatics research.

Promoting Research Transparency

JMID strongly encourages authors to share supporting data, code, and materials to enhance the reproducibility and value of published informatics research.

Transparency in computational health research is essential for building trust in scientific literature. JMID supports FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) for data and code management while respecting patient privacy.

1. Data Availability Statements

All empirical manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement (DAS). Example statements:

  • "The de-identified dataset is available at [repository URL with DOI]."
  • "Data are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request and institutional data use agreement."
  • "Data cannot be shared due to patient privacy regulations and IRB restrictions."
2. Code and Software Sharing

We strongly encourage depositing code in recognized repositories:

  • GitHub/GitLab: Version-controlled repositories with clear documentation
  • Zenodo: Archive with DOI for permanent citation
  • Code Ocean: Executable research compendiums
  • CRAN/PyPI: For reusable R/Python packages
3. Data Privacy Considerations

Health informatics research often involves sensitive patient data:

De-identification

All shared datasets must be properly de-identified following HIPAA Safe Harbor or Expert Determination methods. Describe de-identification procedures in your Methods section.

Data Use Agreements

For restricted datasets, describe how qualified researchers can request access, including any required IRB approvals or data use agreements.

4. Third-Party Permissions

If your manuscript includes material previously published elsewhere:

  • Obtain written permission from the original copyright holder
  • Provide permission documentation during submission
  • Include appropriate attribution in figure legends
