Overview

Human physiology is the branch of biology that studies the normal functions of the human body and the mechanisms by which its cells, tissues, organs, and integrated systems maintain life. It explains how the body sustains internal stability, or homeostasis, in the face of changing internal and external conditions, and it provides the functional baseline against which disease, or pathophysiology, is defined. The discipline spans multiple system levels and includes muscular function, where distinct modes of muscular contraction such as isometric, concentric, and eccentric actions generate force and movement; cardiovascular and electrophysiological control of the heart, including how cardiac haemodynamics and rhythm differ across hormonal states such as the fertile and post-menopausal conditions; and respiratory regulation, including the controlled breathing patterns studied under practices like pranayama. Environmental and exercise physiology examine how the body responds to thermal stress, comparing performance in cold and warm conditions and the use of cold-water immersion for recovery in sport. Other areas address the role of the gut microbiota in maintaining health. Significance lies in supplying the mechanistic foundation for medicine, sports science, and rehabilitation. Core sub-areas include cellular, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, neural, endocrine, and integrative whole-body physiology.
