Overview
Salmon are anadromous fish of the family Salmonidae, comprising species in the genera Salmo, such as the Atlantic salmon, and Oncorhynchus, which includes the Pacific salmon. They are distinguished by a complex life cycle in which individuals hatch in freshwater rivers and streams, migrate to the sea to feed and grow, and return to natal freshwater to spawn. This life history depends on the connectivity between marine, estuarine, and riverine environments and on physiological adaptation to changing salinity during smoltification. Ecologically, salmon are keystone species that transfer marine-derived nutrients to freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, support predators, and serve as indicators of watershed and ocean health. Populations are sensitive to environmental and anthropogenic pressures, including habitat alteration, barriers to migration, water quality, climate variability, and underwater noise that can affect fish behavior and physiology. Case studies of river systems illustrate how multiple stressors combine to depress wild stocks. Research on salmon spans population dynamics, migration and spawning ecology, conservation, fisheries management, and aquaculture, alongside their nutritional value as a source of high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Understanding the factors that adversely affect salmon populations is central to sustaining both ecological function and commercial and cultural value.
