Overview

Cardiovascular refers to the heart and the network of blood vessels that circulate blood throughout the body, and cardiovascular disease encompasses the disorders affecting this system, including atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmia, stroke, and congenital heart disease. Atherosclerotic processes, driven by endothelial dysfunction and lipid-laden plaque formation, underlie much of the ischemic burden, while elevated blood pressure imposes chronic strain that remodels the myocardium and vasculature. The discipline weighs modifiable risk factors such as smoking, dyslipidemia, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity against non-modifiable contributors including age and genetic predisposition, and increasingly recognizes psychological and metabolic comorbidities as independent influences on outcome. Research in this area examines candidate genes for human cardiovascular disease, depressive symptoms and cardiovascular risk in diabetic elderly populations, and risk-factor profiles among hypertensive older adults and people treated for HIV across diverse national settings. Further work addresses knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward cardiovascular disease, metabolic acidosis as a contributor in peritoneal dialysis, the cardiovascular effects of smoking and vaping, congenital heart disease and physical activity, and the interplay of depression and anxiety with cardiovascular health during menopause. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning these epidemiological, genetic, risk-factor, and comorbidity dimensions of cardiovascular disease across varied populations and clinical contexts.
