Overview

Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, is a cancer treatment that uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors by damaging their DNA so they can no longer grow and divide. It can be delivered from outside the body or from radioactive sources placed within or near a tumor, as in brachytherapy. Radiation therapy may be used alone or alongside surgery, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy, and it is applied across many cancers, including prostate cancer, to control or eliminate disease while aiming to spare surrounding healthy tissue. Research published through OpenAccessPub examines radiation therapy techniques and their use in treating cancer. Work includes a comparison of two-dimensional and three-dimensional brachytherapy in cervical cancer, the assessment of target-volume definition for radiosurgery of atypical meningiomas using multimodality imaging, and the combination of radiation therapy with immunotherapy in melanoma, illustrating both delivery methods and combined-treatment strategies. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to radiation therapy, supporting an evidence-based understanding of how radiotherapy is planned and delivered, how it is combined with other treatments, and how it contributes to cancer care.
