Overview

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures of the lymphatic system that filter lymph fluid and house immune cells, playing a central role in immune surveillance and in the spread and staging of cancer. Distributed throughout the body in clusters, lymph nodes trap pathogens, foreign particles, and abnormal cells, while serving as sites where immune responses are activated. In oncology, lymph nodes are of particular importance because many cancers metastasise first to regional nodes; the presence and extent of lymph node involvement is a key prognostic factor and a determinant of staging and treatment planning. Examination of lymph nodes through biopsy, fine-needle aspiration, histopathology, and imaging informs clinical decision-making across a wide range of malignancies. Lymph nodes can also be the primary site of disease in lymphomas. Related indices, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, are studied as markers of systemic inflammation and prognosis. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research touching on these themes, including studies of lymph node metastasis and prognostic variables in triple-negative breast cancer, the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in laryngeal carcinoma, nodal outcomes in differentiated thyroid cancer, and case reports of lymphoid malignancies such as Lennert lymphoma and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
