Overview

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is a lipoprotein particle that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream and is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. When present in excess, LDL particles can contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits in the walls of arteries, a process that narrows the vessels and raises the risk of events such as heart attack and stroke. LDL cholesterol is therefore a key marker in the assessment and management of cardiometabolic health. LDL cholesterol levels are influenced by diet, lifestyle, genetics, and other metabolic factors, and they are commonly addressed through dietary change, physical activity, and medication. The research collected here reflects the dietary and metabolic dimensions of lipid health, including studies of the effects of grape juice, fennel, and soy milk on blood lipids and related outcomes, and the interaction of dietary interventions with lipid-lowering treatment in animal models. Other articles examine vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms in dyslipidemia among patients with coronary artery disease, culturally tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions to reduce cardiometabolic risk, anthropometric indicators of central obesity, and risk-prediction tools for cardiovascular disease. Together they illustrate how diet, lifestyle, and metabolic factors relate to cholesterol and broader cardiovascular risk.
