Overview
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a broad term for disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, and related conditions. Many forms develop when fatty deposits build up in the walls of the arteries, narrowing them and impairing blood flow, which can lead to events such as heart attack and stroke. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide and is influenced by a combination of metabolic, genetic, lifestyle, and other risk factors, making prevention, early detection, and management important across the lifespan. Within the International Journal of Heart Research, cardiovascular disease is examined through its risk factors, mechanisms, and clinical care. Reported research relevant to this topic includes work on cardiovascular disease in relation to depression and anxiety during menopause, the link between metabolic acidosis and cardiovascular disease in patients on peritoneal dialysis, the identification of candidate genes underlying human cardiovascular disease, the potential role of antioxidant micronutrients in managing metabolic syndrome, and a survey of knowledge, attitudes, and practices about cardiovascular disease among adult patients. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cardiovascular disease, its risk factors, and its management.
