Overview

Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia characterised by rapid, disorganised electrical activity in the atria, the upper chambers of the heart, producing an irregular and often fast heartbeat. It disrupts coordinated atrial contraction, allowing blood to pool and clot, which raises the risk of stroke, and it is also associated with heart failure and reduced quality of life. The condition is diagnosed mainly by electrocardiography, and management combines rate or rhythm control, anticoagulation to prevent thromboembolism, and treatment of underlying cardiovascular risk factors, with catheter ablation used in selected cases. In cardiology, atrial fibrillation is significant as a leading source of stroke and a marker of broader cardiovascular disease, and its prevention and management are closely tied to lifestyle and comorbidity control. Key aspects include stroke risk and anticoagulation, rhythm management, ablation, and modifiable risk factors. Research published in this journal examines adherence to a Mediterranean diet and atrial fibrillation risk, anticoagulation after cardiac ablation procedures, chronic atrial fibrillation, and related cardiac conditions such as right atrial thrombus and assessment of cardiac function with sleep-disordered breathing, reflecting attention to the rhythm disorder's risk factors, complications, and clinical management.
