Overview
Bone is the rigid, mineralized connective tissue that forms the skeleton, composed of a collagenous organic matrix impregnated with calcium phosphate mineral, principally hydroxyapatite, together with osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts. It provides structural support, protects organs, enables movement, stores calcium and phosphate, and houses the marrow responsible for hematopoiesis. Bone is continually renewed through remodeling, and its mechanical and metabolic properties are central to mineral homeostasis, fracture resistance, and tissue repair. In bone and mineral metabolism research, bone is studied through its composition and microstructure, its repair and regeneration, and the biomaterials and grafts used to restore skeletal defects. The peer-reviewed work in this area reflects these themes, including calcium orthophosphate scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, 3D-printed bone scaffolds and biocompatible materials, trabecular bone structure in population studies, trace-element content in bone affected by chondrosarcoma, bone marrow involvement in tumor-bearing animals, titanium-nickelide mesh in bone repair, vitamin D3 effects on osteoblast bone-health parameters, and platelet-rich fibrin and nanoparticles in bone-defect healing. Methods span biomaterial development, histological and microstructural analysis, imaging, and experimental and clinical study. This body of research treats bone as a dynamic, mineralized tissue whose composition, remodeling, repair, and engineering are fundamental to skeletal health and to the broader field of mineral metabolism.
