Neurology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, encompassing the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular junctions. Its clinical scope includes cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, dementia and neurodegeneration, multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating disorders, movement disorders, neuro-oncology, infections of the central nervous system, and neurorehabilitation. The discipline integrates the neurological examination with neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and laboratory and biomarker analysis to localize lesions and define mechanism, and it increasingly draws on advances in neuroscience to refine diagnosis and therapy.
