Overview
Implementation, in the sense of Implementation science, is the scientific study of methods and strategies to promote the systematic uptake of evidence-based interventions, practices, and policies into routine care and real-world settings in order to improve health outcomes and service quality. It addresses the persistent gap between what research demonstrates to be effective and what is actually delivered in clinical, community, and organizational practice. Core concerns include the design and evaluation of implementation strategies, systematic identification of barriers and facilitators to adoption, fidelity to intervention components, the influence of context, stakeholder and end-user engagement, and the sustainability and scale-up of interventions over time. Work in this field commonly employs qualitative and mixed methods alongside established implementation frameworks and determinant or process models to characterize how, why, and under what conditions change succeeds. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to this area, encompassing analyses of barriers and facilitators to delivering services and screening, the rollout and scale-up of programs and monitoring practices, and the integration of new models of care into health systems. Representative themes include embedding therapeutic and preventive services into routine practice, community-based and task-shifted delivery of care, person-centered care models, and the policy and organizational factors that shape whether effective interventions reach the populations intended to benefit from them.
