Overview
Stroke is an acute neurological injury caused by disruption of cerebral blood flow, resulting in focal brain dysfunction and, if perfusion is not restored, infarction of brain tissue. It is divided into ischaemic stroke, due to thrombotic or embolic occlusion of a cerebral artery, which accounts for the majority of cases, and haemorrhagic stroke, due to rupture of a blood vessel with intracerebral or subarachnoid bleeding. Clinical features depend on the vascular territory involved and may include unilateral weakness, sensory loss, aphasia, visual deficits, and impaired coordination or consciousness. Hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor, and stroke sits at the core of Hypertension and Cardiology through shared vascular mechanisms including atherosclerosis, cardioembolism, endothelial dysfunction, and arterial dissection. Research in this area encompasses stroke subtypes and endothelial function, acute care pathways and imaging protocols such as computed tomography angiography for evaluating ischaemic stroke, the impact of healthcare-system factors and the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke care and admission, in-hospital outcomes and complications, genetic susceptibility, and emerging models of post-stroke recovery using stem-cell and tissue-engineering approaches. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research relevant to stroke pathophysiology, diagnosis and acute management, risk factors including hypertension, and recovery, reflecting its central place in cerebrovascular and cardiovascular medicine.
