Overview
Cardiac output is the volume of blood the heart pumps into the circulation each minute, calculated as the product of stroke volume, the amount ejected with each beat, and heart rate. It is a fundamental measure of how well the heart meets the body's demand for oxygen and nutrients, and it changes with activity, posture, and disease. Reduced cardiac output is a hallmark of conditions such as heart failure, while the heart's pumping capacity is influenced by factors including blood pressure, valve function, contractility, and the resistance against which the heart works. Assessing cardiac function is therefore central to cardiology. Hypertension and Cardiology publishes peer-reviewed research on heart and vascular disease, the physiology of cardiac function, and the management of conditions that affect the heart's performance. Reported studies examine heart failure in clinical practice, the physiology and pathophysiology of the heart across different states, and the assessment of cardiac function, alongside the broader interplay between blood pressure and cardiac workload. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cardiac output and the wider study of cardiac function, heart failure, and cardiovascular health.
