Overview

Clinical laboratories are facilities that perform analytical testing on biological specimens such as blood, marrow, and other body fluids to support the diagnosis, classification, monitoring, and management of disease. In hematology and oncology they are central to characterizing blood and bone-marrow disorders, providing the measurements and assays on which clinical decisions depend. Their work spans several disciplines, including hematology and coagulation testing, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, microbiology and molecular diagnostics, and morphological and cytogenetic analysis. Typical investigations range from blood counts and the establishment and interpretation of reference ranges for parameters such as hemoglobin, to specialized assays that evaluate platelet number and function in conditions like immune thrombocytopenia, identify inherited or acquired abnormalities of coagulation factors and regulatory proteins, and apply molecular and nucleic-acid amplification methods to detect genetic mutations and infectious agents. Accurate results depend on rigorous attention to pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical quality, appropriate reference intervals, standardization, and validation of methods and commercial assays. By generating reliable, interpretable data, clinical laboratories enable diagnosis of leukemias, lymphomas, anemias, bleeding and clotting disorders, and other conditions, guide treatment selection, and track response and complications. Continued development of laboratory science, including molecular and automated techniques, expands diagnostic capability and underpins both routine care and research in hematology, oncology, and the broader clinical setting.
