Burkitt's Lymphoma

Overview

Burkitt's lymphoma is an aggressive, fast-growing B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, first described by surgeon Denis Burkitt among children in equatorial Africa in the late 1950s. It is characterized by a chromosomal translocation that deregulates the MYC oncogene, driving rapid tumor proliferation that often presents as a mass in the jaw, facial bones, or abdomen. The endemic form is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection and, in malaria-endemic regions, with chronic malaria exposure, while sporadic and immunodeficiency-associated forms occur elsewhere. Because the tumor doubles quickly, prompt diagnosis and intensive multi-agent chemotherapy are central to management, and the disease is among the more curable lymphomas when treated early. Markers such as elevated lactate dehydrogenase can reflect tumor burden and disease activity.
