Overview
Glucose tolerance describes the body's capacity to dispose of an administered glucose load and return blood glucose to baseline within a defined interval, reflecting the combined efficiency of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity. It is assessed clinically by the oral glucose tolerance test, in which a standardized dose of glucose is ingested and plasma glucose is measured at fixed time points, most commonly at two hours. Impaired glucose tolerance, an intermediate state between normal regulation and overt diabetes, marks elevated risk of progression to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, while the test is also central to screening for gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Results are interpreted alongside fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and surrogate indices of insulin sensitivity, and tolerance is modulated by diet, body composition, physical activity, and hormonal status. Themes in the associated literature include risk factors for gestational diabetes in pregnant women, the impairment of glucose regulation under low energy intake, dietary and phytochemical interventions that improve glycemic control, surrogate indices distinguishing insulin-sensitive from insulin-resistant phenotypes, the use of natural non-caloric sweeteners in type 2 diabetes, and the interplay of glucose and insulin in cellular regulation. Related work addresses pregnancy outcomes in gestational diabetes and broader nutritional determinants of glycemia. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research on glucose tolerance, glycemic regulation, and the prevention and management of diabetes.
