Overview

Somatic stem cells, also called adult or tissue stem cells, are undifferentiated cells found in the tissues and organs of the body that can divide to renew themselves and give rise to the specialised cell types of the tissue in which they reside. Unlike embryonic stem cells, they are generally more limited in the range of cell types they can produce, but they play an essential role throughout life in maintaining, repairing, and regenerating tissues such as blood, skin, and muscle. Because of their regenerative capacity, somatic stem cells are central to regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and the study of disease, and understanding how they are regulated has implications for both healing and cancer, where stem-cell-like populations are thought to contribute to tumour growth. The journal Evolving Stem Cell Research publishes peer-reviewed work on stem cell biology and its applications. Relevant work in this collection includes an overview of emerging paradigms in regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies, an examination of the ethics of modern stem cell research and therapy, and a study evaluating circadian oscillators in cancer stem cells. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to somatic stem cells, supporting evidence-based understanding of their biology, therapeutic potential, and role in tissue repair and disease.
