Overview
Energy transmission is the transfer of energy from sites of generation to points of use, encompassing the bulk movement of electrical power, natural gas, heat, and other carriers across distance. In electrical systems it denotes high-voltage transport over transmission lines that link generation to distribution networks, where voltage is stepped up to reduce resistive losses and stepped down near consumers. Key engineering considerations include conductor resistance and reactance, line losses, power quality, grid stability, and the integration of variable renewable sources. Beyond electricity, energy transmission includes pipeline transport of gaseous and liquid fuels and the conveyance of thermal energy in district heating and industrial systems. At a physical level, energy propagates through fields and waves, and transmission-line theory describes how voltage and current waves travel, reflect, and interact along guided structures, with applications extending to waveguides and high-frequency signal transport. Efficiency, reliability, and safety are governed by losses, insulation, thermal limits, and protective control. Contemporary research addresses reducing transmission losses, improving grid resilience, accommodating distributed and intermittent generation, and coupling electrical, thermal, and chemical energy vectors. Effective transmission infrastructure underpins energy security, electrification, and the decarbonization of supply by enabling power to be delivered where and when it is needed.
