Overview

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are RNA molecules that are transcribed from the genome but not translated into protein, instead functioning as regulators of gene expression and genome organization. They include small species such as microRNAs and small interfering RNAs, as well as long non-coding RNAs and circular RNAs, and act through mechanisms including transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, control of mRNA stability and translation, chromatin modification, and scaffolding of molecular complexes. Their dysregulation is implicated in cancer and other diseases, and they serve increasingly as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Research relevant to this area includes the emerging roles of plant circular RNAs, long non-coding RNA and epigenetic biomarkers in head-and-neck cancer, microRNA-based dietary and regulatory approaches, molecular evolution of virus-derived sequences, immunogenomic approaches to cancer and infectious disease, RNA-binding protein biology, and epigenetic pathways in plant breeding.
