Overview

Barretts Esophagus (BE) is a serious complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is a condition where cells that are similar to those present in the stomach lining, grow in the esophagus. BE increases the risk of developing a type of cancer called adenocarcinoma, which is usually difficult to detect and potentially fatal if not diagnosed at an early stage. BE is treated with medications and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding certain foods and drinks, cutting down on smoking and alcohol, and exercising regularly. Furthermore, endoscopic surveillance and surgery may be recommended. Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of developing the cancer associated with BE. Therefore, it is important for those who suffer from GERD to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
