Overview
Wistar rats are an outbred albino laboratory rat strain widely used in biomedical research due to their genetic diversity, docile temperament, and well-characterized physiology. Research published in this journal employs Wistar rats as experimental models to investigate diverse health-related questions spanning toxicology, pharmacology, and disease mechanisms. Studies have examined the biological effects of environmental exposures including radiofrequency radiation, aluminum sulphates, and cadmium-induced osteoporosis, providing insights into potential health risks and tissue-specific responses. A substantial body of work explores the therapeutic potential of plant-derived compounds, evaluating extracts from species such as Jatropha tanjorensis, Dialium guineense, Solanum aethiopicum, Ocimum gratissium, Opuntia ficus indica, Abelmoschus esculentus, and Auricularia polytricha for their effects on metabolic parameters, oxidative stress, cancer prevention, cardiovascular protection, and histological changes in organs including the liver, intestines, and reproductive tissues. Additional research investigates how early-life experiences, such as neonatal pain, may influence long-term behavioral outcomes. This body of work underscores the continued importance of Wistar rats in translational research, bridging laboratory findings with potential applications in understanding human health conditions and evaluating natural product interventions.
