Overview
HIV/AIDS prevention encompasses the strategies and interventions aimed at reducing the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and limiting its progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Prevention spans behavioural measures such as consistent condom use and reduction of risk behaviours, biomedical approaches including testing and treatment adherence, and educational and structural efforts to raise awareness and change attitudes. It is a central component of public health, particularly important among adolescents, young people, and other groups at elevated risk. Effective prevention depends on knowledge, perception, and practice within communities, and on the social, psychological, and contextual factors that shape sexual behaviour and access to services. Research published under this topic includes the use of sport activities as a vehicle for HIV/AIDS prevention, knowledge and preventive-lifestyle practices among tertiary and secondary students, psychosocial predictors of sexual abstinence, and school-based prevention and risk-reduction programs for adolescents. Further work addresses theoretical frameworks for working with people living with HIV and AIDS, determinants of consistent condom use, sexual risk behaviours among sex workers, factors influencing HIV status disclosure, and attitudes toward counselling and testing, reflecting the behavioural, educational, and social dimensions central to prevention efforts across diverse populations.
