Overview
HIV-2 is one of the two main types of the human immunodeficiency virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Compared with the globally dominant HIV-1, HIV-2 is largely concentrated in West Africa, is generally transmitted less efficiently, and typically follows a slower clinical course with lower plasma viral loads and a longer asymptomatic phase. Importantly, HIV-2 carries intrinsic resistance to certain antiretroviral drug classes, notably non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and some entry inhibitors, which alters regimen selection and complicates viral-load monitoring because many standard assays are optimized for HIV-1. Accurate type-differentiating serological and molecular diagnostics are therefore essential for appropriate management. As a distinct lentivirus within the broader HIV field, HIV-2 sits alongside research on HIV epidemiology, antiretroviral treatment, prevention, and care of people living with the virus. Work in this area spans diagnostic testing accuracy, treatment adherence and disclosure, prevalence patterns, and the sociocultural context of HIV-affected populations across several regions. This peer-reviewed scholarship contributes to clinical understanding of viral diversity, the design of type-specific testing and treatment strategies, and the wider effort to characterize and respond to human immunodeficiency virus infection.
