Overview

Systems biology is the study of biological systems as integrated networks rather than collections of isolated parts. It combines experimental data with computational, mathematical and bioinformatic methods to understand how genes, proteins, metabolites and other components interact to produce the behaviour of cells, tissues and organisms. By modelling these networks, systems biology seeks to explain emergent properties, predict how systems respond to perturbation, and inform applications such as diagnostics, personalised medicine and drug discovery. Reflecting the cross-disciplinary scope of this journal and its companion titles, related research has applied integrative and computational approaches to biological problems. Studies include proteomic and genomic techniques in medical research with applications in cancer, diagnostics and personalised medicine, bioinformatic resources for diabetic nephropathy, the bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes, and a network-pharmacology strategy for predicting therapeutic targets. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to systems biology and the use of high-throughput data and computational modelling to understand complex biological networks.
