Overview
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterised by elevated blood glucose resulting from insulin resistance combined with a relative deficiency of insulin secretion. It is the most common form of diabetes and develops when the body's cells respond poorly to insulin and the pancreas cannot compensate by producing enough of the hormone. The disease is a major and growing public health concern, associated with obesity, physical inactivity, advancing age, and genetic predisposition. Persistently high glucose contributes to long-term complications affecting the cardiovascular system, kidneys, nerves, and eyes, making prevention and effective management central to care. Management combines lifestyle modification, pharmacotherapy, and ongoing glucose monitoring. Key research areas span the molecular and bioinformatic study of metabolism, nutrition and dietary intervention, self-management and quality of life, comorbidities, and emerging therapeutic approaches. This journal, focused on Bioinformatics And Diabetes, publishes work reflecting several of these themes, including the bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes, the impact of nutrients, biopsychosocial models of self-management and quality of life, non-invasive continuous blood glucose measurement techniques, links between diabetes and depression, plant-derived and complementary therapies, coronary artery calcification, obstructive sleep apnoea, and the prospect of gene-editing approaches such as CRISPR.
