Overview

Degenerative diseases are chronic disorders marked by the progressive deterioration of cells, tissues, or organs, leading to declining function over time. They include neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as degenerative processes affecting the eye, cardiovascular system, and connective tissue, and arise from interacting genetic, age-related, and environmental factors. Central to many is the accumulation of oxidative damage, with reactive oxygen species, telomere attrition, and impaired antioxidant defence contributing to cellular ageing, alongside emerging interest in regenerative and stem-cell-based therapies. The research collected here reflects these themes through studies of oxidative telomere attrition, nutritional antioxidants, and biological ageing, antioxidant phytochemicals as potential treatments for age-related macular degeneration, the ethics of stem-cell research and therapy, and emerging paradigms in regenerative medicine. Further work addresses metabolomic assessment of environmental exposure, focal cartilage-related protein expression in degenerative mitral valves, and molecular biomarkers of disease. Together they span oxidative mechanisms, ageing, regenerative approaches, and the biomarkers used to study chronic degenerative processes across organ systems. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to degenerative disease, including the mechanisms, risk factors, and therapeutic strategies associated with progressive tissue and neuronal deterioration.
